On our way back to the office, Brenda turns to me as soon as we’re safely alone, “You did pretty good back there.”

“Thanks,” I say sadly, realizing what I just turned down.

“You knew him, didn’t you?”

“I did. I had fired him as my agent, because I thought he wasn’t good at his job. Turns out, I just wasn’t a good client.”

“I think this was your chance to fix it,” she says, turning to walk away.

“Wait, where are you going?” My chest tightens at the thought of being alone with no idea what to do.

“Back to work. And so are you.” When she goes to leave, I reach out for her arm.

“Brenda, what do I do now?” I ask, genuinely confused, my useless calendar constantly changing on me.

“Isn’t it obvious? You have a book to write.”

Once she’s gone, I flop back into my seat with a loud exhale. “A book to write? Yeah right! What a joke. I couldn’t write a book on childcare to save my life.”

Frustrated, I pull the books from the bag, stacking them one on top of the other, the pile getting so high, it leans like the Tower of Pisa. All of the books start with pregnancy and go from there, one after other, in common sense order, like dominos.

I stare at them for a while, no clue how much time has passed, before an idea hits me like a lightning bolt.

I can’t, in good faith, write another book about children or schooling right now, but there is a book I could write, and it would be glorious.

I grab the phone and dial the number on his business card. He picks up on the first ring, “Miss me already?” he laughs.

“I have a different book idea. That I could write now. About how to start and market a business or even how to start a medical practice. We can work on the idea. You can tell me what would sell best and what readers might want. I’m willing to be flexible this time.”

I wait, my heart beating rapidly in my chest. Publishing a book has always been a dream of mine, but one that remained elusive and shrouded in mystery. The one achievement I couldn’t figure out. It’s a few seconds before he responds and my heart lunges into my throat.

“You know what…I like it. I think it could work. Let me think about how to position it and see what I can do. I’ll be in touch.”

When the call ends, I let the phone fall dramatically on my desk like I’m dropping a mic.

This is my first major victory in the switch, and it feels damn good.
